Samatel becomes latest MVNO to launch in Oman

24 Aug 2010

Mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) Samatel has announced the launch of services for residential and business users in Oman over the wireless network of Nawras. Samatel’s new service is based on Effortel’s mobile virtual network enabler platform, which delivers all of the technical and operational needs of the network, allowing the operator to focus on the key marketing and customer service requirements. It also provides Samatel with the ability to design and operate bespoke mobile packages. ‘Samatel is 100% Omani owned, has access to a countrywide network of 400 retail outlets and our customers are supported locally,’ commented Dr Wael Taher, CEO of Samatel, adding: ‘We know the local market conditions extremely well but we also needed a platform and partner that allows us to exploit that knowledge. Effortel’s experience launching and running multiple MVNO ventures makes it much more than a technology partner. It is a valued business advisor that will help us to launch and maintain compelling services for our customers.’ Samatel says it targets untapped and underserved segments of the market, with services and competitive pricing tailored to suit specific needs.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, FRiENDi was the first MVNO to launch in Oman in April 2009, followed by Majan Telecommunication under the brand Renna the following month. Halafoni – a joint venture between radio stations Hala FM and Hi FM, and Connect Arabia – launched in July 2009, with Mazoon Mobile following in November 2009. Meanwhile, Injaz International Telecommunications signed a deal with Nawras to launch mobile services over its network January 2010, but has not yet launched services.
