Digicel has announced the launch of WiMAX services to consumers in Jamaica. The company has offered WiMAX to business customers since 2007, and the WiMAX network currently consists of 170 base stations covering 60% of the population, with further roll outs planned. Wireless modems, which have to be plugged into wall sockets, are on sale now, with USB modems expected to go on sale within the next two months. The CEO of Digicel Jamaica, Mark Linehan, says that WiMAX handsets should be available by August 2011.
