DTG refutes suggestion it is building a WiMAX network

22 Jul 2010

The Business Development Manager for DiscoveryTel Ghana (DTG), Nana Duffuor, has told the Ghana Business News that it is not deploying WiMAX technology, but rather a fourth-generation wireless broadband network. Duffuor’s emphatic statement comes in the wake of the heavily publicised announcement this week by Greek telecoms technology company Intracom Telecom that it has won a USD1.2 million contract from DTG to build what would be Ghana’s first WiMAX network. Duffour did confirm however, that a deal has been signed by the two companies.

CommsUpdate reported that Intracom Telecom has been contracted to build a turnkey mobile WiMAX network based on its OmniMAX branded access solution, and its high capacity, next generation native-Ethernet microwave backhaul platform, OmniBAS. OmniMAX operates in the 2.5GHz-2.7GHz and 3.4GHz-3.8GHz frequency bands and is fully compliant with IEEE 802.16e-2005 and WiMAX Forum Wave-II Certification requirements. Further, Intracom Telecom plans to deploy its unified Management Suite (uni|MS) at DTG’s network operations centre to supervise and manage the network. The vendor says the whole project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2010 and will enable DTG to provide high speed broadband wireless access to residential and business users in greater Accra (covering approximately two million people) and other major cities. The contract also includes an extension option to provide equipment for mobile WiMAX coverage to other major cities across the country. In the wake of the confusion an official for Intracom told the newspaper, ‘We are building a mobile WiMAX network. I believe we are talking about the same thing but because we live in different worlds, we use different terms.’
