Court asks regulator to explain decision to cancel licences of five operators

13 Jul 2010

Bangladesh’s High Court has stayed for three months the decision by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to cancel licences of five private wireline operators. The watchdog terminated the services of RanksTel, Dhaka Phone, National Telecom, Peoples Tel and World Tel in March this year on the grounds that the companies were involved in the illegal provision of VoIP services. The court has asked the BTRC and the government to explain within three weeks why the decision should not be declared illegal.
