Norma gains direct access to global internet market

5 Jul 2010

Moldova’s National Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Information Technology (ANRCETI) has announced it has permitted local telecoms company Norma to enter the global internet direct access market. The regulator has authorised the company for the operation, management and maintenance of an electronic communications network. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, incumbent telco Moldtelecom was the sole operator permitted to have direct international access until April 2010, when Orange Moldova and StarNet were permitted by ANRCETI to operate international network links, giving the operators direct access to global internet traffic for the first time. Both Norma and Orange have already deployed the relevant infrastructure in the Ungheni zone of the country, which borders Romania, and are currently working on interconnecting their networks with foreign operators, prior to the launch of commercial services. Norma intends to provide data transmission services, internet access and leased lines over its fixed network, while Orange plans to offer international voice, data transmission and internet access via its radio network. The regulator claims that the opening up of the market will help stimulate competition, leading to a fall in tariffs for broadband internet services and an increase in service quality.
