Sitra WiMAX launches in Indonesia

On 28 June 2010 Sitra WiMAX, a subsidiary of PT First Media and an affiliate of the Lippo Group, launched commercial 4G WiMAX services in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi, Banten area, Northern Sumatra and Aceh. PT First Media has reportedly invested USD50 million to get the Sitra WiMAX brand off the ground and plans to spend a further USD350 million to further develop the business. According to First Media president Hengkie Liwanto the CAPEX is being funded via a USD52 million rights issue, as well as through internal resources and bank loans. Sitra WiMAX chief marketing officer, Jerome Teh, says the firm’s initial focus will be to provide reliable broadband internet access to the public. The company, which was awarded 15MHz of bandwidth in the 2.3GHz band in July 2009, is confident it can sign up one million subscribers in less than three years.
