Street protests erupt as thousands bemoan woeful mobile phone services

28 May 2010

Mobile phone users in Ghana took to the streets of Accra yesterday to protest at the poor level of mobile phone services they believe they are getting from the nation’s service providers MTN Ghana, Millicom Ghana Company Limited (Tigo), Kasapa Telecom (Expresso), Vodafone (Ghana) and Zain Communications Ghana Limited (formerly WESTEL). The Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) and other consumer right groups reportedly called on all mobile phone users in Ghana to switch off their handsets from 6a.m. to 12a.m. local time as part of its protest to express their demand for better services from the incumbent cellcos. A petition was handed to the deputy communications minister, Dr Nartey Siaw Sapore, who has promised to look into their claims and take any necessary remedial action.
