Lebara Group acquires Dutch MVNO Chippie; KPN ups investment in Jasper Wireless

21 May 2010

The Lebara Group, which was founded in 2001 to offer tailored MVNO telecoms solutions across Europe, yesterday announced it has acquired the ‘Chippie’ brand and customer base in the Netherlands, strengthening its position as a fast-growing low-cost international mobile calls provider. In a press release Lebara said it will retain the Chippie name in the Netherlands, which is designed to address migrant communities with friends and family in North and South America, the Caribbean, the Middle East and Asia. Like the group’s own Dutch MVNO Lebara Mobile, Chippie piggybacks its services on KPN’s network.

In related news, KPN has made an equity investment in machine-to-machine communications (M2M) service platform provider Jasper Wireless. The move cements KPN’s position as the preferred network operator for Jasper’s businesses in Europe, and exclusive operator in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. Founded in 2004, Jasper Wireless is a privately held company based in Sunnyvale, California, USA with regional offices in the UK. Its operating platform enables network operators to quickly and efficiently service the M2M market, and for their M2M customers to run their connected device businesses in an optimised fashion. Jasper’s wireless M2M applications include connectivity-enabled devices that use a cellular data link to communicate with the computer server, a database to store collected data and a software application that allows the data to be analyzed, reported, and acted upon.
