BTRC cancels licences of five fixed operators

12 May 2010

The Bangladesh Telecom Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has decided to revoke the licences of five fixed line telephony operators, whose services it suspended in March for their alleged involvement in illegal international call termination through VoIP technology. Local newspaper The Daily Star reports that the five operators are RanksTel, Dhaka Phone, National TeleCom, PeoplesTel and WorldTel. The shock decision to cancel the concessions – instead of issuing fines as had previously been expected – was taken at a BTRC meeting yesterday, but the watchdog’s chairperson Zia Ahmed reportedly declined to comment on the matter.
