Moroccan telecoms group Maroc Telecom recorded consolidated revenues of MAD7.437 billion (USD858 million) in the first quarter of 2010, up by 4.3% compared to the same period in 2009. As of 31 March 2010 the group’s total customer base stood at 22.4 million, up by 14% year-on-year, across divisions in Morocco, Mauritania (Mauritel), Burkina Faso (Onatel), Gabon (Gabon Telecom), Mali (Sotelma) and Belgium (Mobisud Belgium). The most recent acquisition, Sotelma, was consolidated as from 1 August 2009. Consolidated operating income in the three-month period rose 0.5% year-on-year to MAD3.205 billion, while EBITDA reached MAD4.282 billion, up 1.5% y-o-y. The company’s fixed, mobile and broadband operations in Morocco generated Q1 revenues of MAD6.095 million, down 0.7% year-on-year, and operational income of MAD2.898 billion, down 3.1%, which the telco’s statement attributed chiefly to the financial impact of ‘marketing and communications efforts.’ Maroc Telecom’s domestic mobile customer base grew by 6.5% year-on-year to 15.578 million at end-March 2010, including 265,000 3G mobile broadband internet subscribers. The ADSL fixed broadband user base fell by 2% year-on-year to 474,000.
