Wireless licence piques interest of 19

19 companies have acquired tender documents for an international public tender for Mozambique’s third mobile licence, according to the director-general of the country’s National Communications Institute (INCM). Those reported to be interested include Zain of Kuwait, Portugal Telecom and France Telecom. Americo Muchanga said that the number of potential bidding companies was ‘very positive’, adding that the deadline for submitting bids is 21 June.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Mozambique is home to two wireless network operators: Mcel with an estimated 3.8 million customers at the end of 2009 and Vodacom with 1.63 million at the same date. The population of Mozambique stands at around 22 million.
