Canadian full-service telco Telus will spend CAD70 million (USD69.6 million) to upgrade its Vancouver Island fixed network to offer higher Internet speeds and high definition TV (HDTV) with the main aim of offering a more tempting package of services to users than cable-based competitor Shaw Communications, reports FierceTelecom. Telus says that by the end of 2010 98% of Victoria residents will be able to access its new super-high speed and IPTV-based HD services. To achieve its goal, Telus plans to lay more than 450km of fibre-optic cable in Greater Victoria.
