Brad Horwitz, CEO of Haitian cellco Voila’s parent Trilogy International Partners, says the US firm is considering an ownership bid for domestic PSTN operator Telecommunications d’Haiti (Teleco), Associated Press (AP) quotes the official as saying. Teleco, which suffered major damage to its infrastructure in the recent earthquake in Haiti, was on the brink of signing a privatisation deal with Vietnamese telco Viettel immediately prior to the catastrophe. Although Viettel has not completed its proposed strategic stake purchase in the Haitian company, it has since claimed that it will honour its investment commitments in the country, without explicitly stating whether it still intends to take ownership of Teleco. At a United Nation-led conference held last Wednesday, around 50 international donors pledged nearly USD10 billion to assist Haiti’s recovery from the disaster of 12 January, whilst UN humanitarian chief John Holmes told AP of the need for significant private sector investments ‘that are really sustainable’.
