Portuguese cableco Zon Multimedia has announced that it has awarded a contract to French equipment supplier Alcatel-Lucent to deploy a gigabit passive optical network (GPON)-based fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) architecture in Portugal, allowing Zon to improve its HDTV services, video on demand and VoIP services. Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its 7342 Intelligent Services Access Manager Fibre-to-the-User (ISAM FTTU) GPON-based platform in new areas of expansion and on parts of its network where HFC/FTTH technologies run side by side. Paulo Ribeiro, board member of ZON TV Cabo, said: ‘Having over 1.5 million customers, ZON is the largest pay-TV operator in Portugal. As a leader, we want to keep on providing end-users with the best solutions on the market. Though our network is very competitive and allowing us to successfully offer bandwidth demanding services, such as HDTV and high speed internet, we decided to explore parallel ways to bring the best of multimedia applications to our customers. Alcatel-Lucent’s proven GPON solution and its experience in deploying fibre networks will help us introduce this new technology into our network – enabling us to expand our product and service portfolio.’
