US-based equipment vendor Motorola has announced the signing of a multi-million dollar deal with Kuwaiti telecoms group Zain to expand mobile coverage and capacity and enhance service quality in rural and unserved regions of Nigeria. ‘This expansion to rural areas throughout the country will have a positive impact on the economic and social well-being of these communities,’ commented Alain Sainte-Marie, CEO of Zain Nigeria. The expansion project will bring improved data services for mobile users and is slated for completion in early 2010, following improvements on the existing GSM network previously deployed by Motorola. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Zain is the country’s third largest cellco by subscribers, reporting a total of 14.94 million customers at 30 September 2009, representing a market share of 22.2%.
