Sudatel launches HSDPA network

11 Nov 2009

Sudan Telecom (Sudatel) has officially inaugurated a HSDPA network under the Sudani One banner, local daily Sudan Vision reports. The company’s executive manager, Emanuel Hams, noted that current investment in Sudan has exceeded USD200 million, adding that Sudatel’s wireless subscriber base exceeds four million. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Sudatel paid USD230 million in March 2006 to upgrade its fixed-wireless access (FWA) ‘limited mobility’ licence to a full mobile network concession, paving the way for the relaunch of its wireless in the local loop (WiLL) network to a CDMA2000 1x 450MHz cellular network. Services were launched in April 2006 under the Sudani brand, with a commercial 3G 1xEV-DO Rev A upgrade launched in early 2008. By mid-2009 Sudatel’s wireless network provided coverage to 80% of the population. Alongside its CDMA services, the GSM Association states that Sudatel initially launched its GSM network under the Sudani One brand in May 2009.
