AIS’ profit falls 7.7%, expects to turn a corner

6 Nov 2009

Thailand’s largest mobile operator Advanced Info Services (AIS) has posted a net profit of THB4.18 billion (USD125 million) for the third quarter of 2009, down by 7.7% from THB4.55 billion year-on-year and THB4.19 billion quarter-on-quarter, as consolidated revenues fell by 9.3% year-on-year from THB27.53 billion to THB24.97 billion; service revenues excluding interconnection fees dipped 4%. However, AIS said that subsequent results are expected to improve in line with the wider Thai economy. The Singapore-backed cellco added 380,000 net new mobile subscribers in July-September 2009, compared to 809,000 additions in the year-ago quarter, but higher than the 320,000 added in the second quarter of 2009. AIS’ total subscribers numbered 28.28 million at end-September, up by 1.51 million in twelve months. The GSM operator also announced a new lower network investment budget of THB50 billion for the next three years including planned 3G services, down from a previous forecast of THB75 billion.
