3G reserve prices pinned down, but auction date in question

22 Oct 2009

Thailand’s National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) yesterday released the reserve bid prices for the country’s upcoming auction of four 15-year 3G mobile licences in the 2100MHz band. Dow Jones Newswires reports that the reserve for each of three 10MHz bandwidth licences is set at THB4.6 billion (USD138 million) whilst bidding for a single 15MHz concession will begin at THB5.2 billion. NTC deputy secretary Prasert Aphiphunya said that the minimum prices were calculated based on the current economic environment and the potential for operators to make a profit. The agency has delayed a public hearing on the auction rules from 5 November to 12 November, making it less likely that the licence bidding will be launched by the end of the year as planned. No exact date for the auction has been set, although the NTC says the final rules will be announced in December.
