Mexican telecoms firm Telmex has been named by a local newspaper as one of a ‘select group of potential buyers’ of a 51% stake in the Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC). Telmex, the company headed by billionaire Carlos Slim, is said by sources familiar with the situation to have had a team of executives in the Bahamas as far back as March/April this year, exploring the feasibility of BTC as a privatisation target. Meanwhile, the newspaper speculates that other players interested in BTC include Caribbean wireless powerhouse Digicel, Cable & Wireless and AT&T. The latter part-owns the Bahamas Cable System with BTC, which carries the Bahamian telco’s international traffic.
