Ireland’s Imagine Communications launches 4G WiMAX network

15 Oct 2009

Irish altnet Imagine Communications Group yesterday announced ambitious plans to roll out a national 4G mobile WiMAX network in the Republic, in partnership with US-based equipment manufacturer Motorola. Imagine’s WiMAX service is already live, with phase one of the deployment covering 250,000 homes in Dublin, with Wexford, Sligo, Tralee and Athlone due to be completed by mid-November. The telco initially plans to invest EUR100 million (USD148.8 million) to upgrade its existing national infrastructure to WiMAX. The new platform, which will cover high- and low-density population areas, enables Imagine to offer a range of new broadband services to homes and businesses across the country. In addition, the company says it hopes to be able to cut its existing price plans by up to 50%.
