According to a report by Portuguese daily Diario de Noticias, Sonaecom and DSTelecom (DST) have agreed to collaborate on an expansion of their fibre-optic networks, aiming to deploy next generation network (NGN) infrastructure in every region of the country. Jose Teixeira, CEO of DST, said: ‘Given that we share the goal of bringing fibre-optic networks to the whole country, including the hinterland, we see this as an opportunity to generate synergies beneficial not only for us and Sonaecom, but also for the Portuguese population, ensuring access to service excellence.’ In April 2009 DST unveiled its plans to invest EUR400 million over five years in the construction of an open access fibre-optic network. DST describes itself as an ‘operator of operators’, supplying wholesale internet connections to ISPs, by providing open access networks.
