UTL seals deal with SEACOM

4 Sep 2009

Uganda Telecom Limited (UTL) has agreed a deal to access the SEACOM fibre-optic cable, as part of its ongoing quest to provide faster internet services. UTL officials say the new arrangement will allow it to offer its customers higher internet bandwidth at no extra cost. Hosseiny Reza, UTL’s chief technical officer, said: ‘For the first time in history, UTL will be connected to the rest of the world via super high bandwidth optical cable. With the new bandwidth being delivered over fibre, it not only means more capacity and higher speeds but also [that] Uganda Telecom can supply much higher bandwidth to our customers, and this will translate into faster and more reliable services.’ Existing UTL clients are to be shifted to the new broadband platform in the coming weeks. Reza says that existing customers will have their internet bandwidth doubled from 64kbps to 128kbps automatically.
