O2 Ireland – now with added mobile TV

19 Aug 2009

O2 Ireland says it has launched a mobile TV service in the Republic under the banner O2 TV. The new service is available via a choice of two packages, which can be delivered directly to the end user’s 3G/HSDPA-enabled handset, with makes supported including Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Samsung. In a press release O2 said O2 TV offers a range of news (RTE News Now, CNN, Travel Channel, Sky News and Sky Sports) and sports channels, as well as streamed programmes from the likes of the Cartoon Network, under the banner ‘O2 Lifestyle Pack’. The cellco’s manager for digital and entertainment services, Karl Aherne, is quoted as saying: ‘We are delighted to be introducing a new mobile TV service for our customers. The two packages we have put together will give customers the widest choice of channels across news, sports and entertainment at extremely competitive rates … O2 previously trialled live broadcast digital TV on mobiles in 2007 using DVB-H technology. While no commercial licence has yet been made available for the provision of mobile TV using DVB-H technology in Ireland, we already know from the trials which were hugely successful that there is a market for mobile TV. We expect our new streaming service ‘O2 TV’ to be very popular with customers.’
