Videotron reports results as it gears up for mobile launch

Videotron’s parent group Quebecor has reported the Quebec-based cableco’s operational and financial results for the second quarter of 2009, showing that revenues at its telecommunications division were up by CAD39.9 million (USD37.2 million) year-on-year at CAD487.4 million, whilst operating income at the unit stood at CAD232.7 million, up by 27.7% from CAD182.2 million in the same period of 2008. Regarding customer growth in the three months to the end of June, 43,900 cable telephone service users were added to reach a total of 934,818, whilst a net increase of 20,600 subscribers took Videotron’s cable internet access subscriber base to 1.078 million. Videotron has around 75,000 customers of its MVNO service, offered over Rogers Communications’ GSM network, and added 5,500 net new users to the service in Q2 2009. It is currently building its own 3.5G mobile network across Quebec, and has announced that it has formed tower-sharing agreements with Rogers and Bell Mobility in Quebec and in the Ottawa area, helping it stick to budget for the planned 1H 2010 launch. The cableco also has wireless roaming agreements in place with Rogers and T-Mobile USA.
