ANACOM extends WiMAX trials

29 Jul 2009

Portuguese regulator Autoridade Nacional de Comunicacoes (ANACOM) has announced that following increased interest from companies intending to carry out trials of WiMAX technology, it has extended the period allowed for such trials in the 3.4GHz-3.8GHz frequency band until 30 September 2009. The regulator will also allow trials to be undertaken in the 2.5GHz and 5.7GHz bands upon request as long as companies present details of their eventual deployment plans. In May 2009 ANACOM launched a public consultation regarding the auction of wireless frequencies. The regulator aims to officially auction wireless spectrum following the conclusion of the trial period; ANACOM has stated that whether or not a company has conducted a trial will have no bearing on the outcome of the auction.
