Indian mobile operator Bharti Airtel has become the first in the country to break the 100 million subscriber barrier, according to the most recently released figures from the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI). At the end of June 2009 Bharti had a total of 102.4 million subscribers, up from 93.9 million three months earlier. Vodafone Essar remains the second largest cellco in the country, with 76.4 million customers. Meanwhile Idea Cellular has continued to close in on third-placed Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL); in the three months to end-June Idea added approximately 1.9 million subscribers compared to 0.9 million additions for the state-owned operator. At the end of the quarter BSNL had a total of 49.1 million subscribers while Idea trailed by just two million, on 47.1 million. Aircel had the highest growth rate, posting a 5.38% increase in subscribers to finish the three-month period on 21.8 million.
