C&W close to landing second multi-million dollar submarine cable

6 Jul 2009

Cable & Wireless (C&W) is reportedly close to landing its second multi-million dollar submarine cable system, which will connect Bermuda to the British Virgin Islands (BVI). The new cable system, a 1,000 mile long link dubbed CBUS, is a joint venture of a number of partners and runs between Bermuda and Tortola (BVI), augmenting a secure network ring that includes C&W Bermuda’s Gemini Cable, which terminates in New Jersey. CBUS will deliver high bandwidth capacity for Bermuda businesses, bringing the island’s undersea cable connections up to the same level as other global financial centres, a statement read. The new submarine cable uses fibre technology to deliver a 700-fold increase in off-island capacity, while directly linking into C&W’s global transmission network. CBUS is expected to be fully commissioned by the third quarter of 2009.
