Zon’s 100Mbps network to pass 1.3m homes this month, 2.8m by end-year

3 Jul 2009

Portuguese triple-play cable and fibre network operator Zon Multimedia expects its new high speed HFC-based access network to pass 1.3 million homes by the end of this month, and 2.8 million households by the end of the year, its director Luis Lopes said on Wednesday, as reported by Reuters. Zon’s new fibre network gives users access to internet, TV and voice services over a single connection with a maximum data transfer rate of 100Mbps. ‘Zon is strengthening its leadership in new generation networks and already guarantees access to these services to over a million homes,’ Lopes said. The cableco, formerly part of incumbent Portugal Telecom, plans to invest EUR300 million (USD422 million) to upgrade its network and expects to receive a EUR100 million loan from the European Investment Bank to help fund the project.
