Private gateway and exchange operators sign agreements with GrameenPhone

8 Jun 2009

Bangladeshi International Gateway (IGW) operators Bangla Trac Communications and Novotel formally signed agreements last month with the country’s largest mobile operator GrameenPhone for routing incoming and outgoing international calls, whilst Interconnection Exchange (ICX) operators Getco Telecommunications and M&H Telecom signed agreements with the cellco for routing domestic inter-operator and international calls to and from GrameenPhone’s network. According to a report in the New Nation, in compliance with the International Long Distance Telecommunications Services policy of 2007, all mobile operators have established physical interconnection with ICXs and logical interconnection with IGW operators via ICXs, ending the international voice traffic monopoly of state-run Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL). TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database notes that five IGW and ICX licences were issued to private domestically-owned companies in February 2008, with Mir Telecom also receiving an IGW permit.
