Qatar Telecom (Qtel) is considering making a bid for a 32% stake in Moroccan mobile operator Meditel put up for sale by Portugal Telecom (PT). Reuters quotes a company spokesperson as saying ‘At this stage it is too early to confirm a definitive interest in Meditel.’ UAE’s Etisalat and Egypt’s Orascom are amongst the telcos interested in buying into Morocco’s second largest GSM provider, whilst its other major foreign shareholder Telefonica is rumoured to be prepared to sell its 32% holding should PT find a suitable strategic investor. Another possibility, according to local press reports, is that the domestic finance consortium owning the remaining shares in Meditel could make an offer to take majority control of the company.
