Movistar launches W-CDMA network

Peruvian wireless network operator Movistar has launched 3G services in the capital Lima, writes BNamericas citing state news service Andina. Movistar, a unit of Spanish operator Telefonica, expects to expand its W-CDMA network to Trujillo, Cuzco and Arequipa by mid-year, with other cities in the south of the country such as Huanuco and Huancavelica likely to receive coverage by the end of the year.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, at the end of March 2009 Movistar had 10.76 million subscribers, equivalent to a 56.77% market share. Its rivals America Movil and Nextel claimed 39.52% and 3.71% respectively.
