Hong Kong’s telecoms regulator OFTA has received three bids for a block of 1800MHz band GSM wireless spectrum from three existing mobile operators in the Special Administrative Region, namely China Mobile Hong Kong (which operates as Peoples), Hong Kong Telecommunications (HKT, part of PCCW, which offers services as PCCW Mobile) and SmarTone (operating under the SmarTone-Vodafone brand). The auction is only open to existing operators as the frequency block on offer (2×4.8MHz) is not deemed sufficient to support the launch of a competitive new network. OFTA will publish a list of qualified bidders in due course.
