PT reveals NGN plans

19 May 2009

Portugal Telecom (PT) has revealed details of its plan to extend its next-generation network (NGN), aiming to reach one million households across Portugal with the fibre-optic network by the end of 2009. PT recently signed an agreement with the government and rival telcos to extend the NGN, aiming to bring high-speed internet, voice and HDTV services to over 1.5 million households. The company announced that it will spend up to EUR650 million (USD876 million) on capital expenditure in 2009 as a result of the NGN programme.

PT has also announced an agreement with Corning Cable Systems to develop and deploy Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology as part of its NGN plans.
