BTC privatisation on track for June

5 May 2009

The privatisation of the Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) is still on track to be completed by June, according to BTC executive chairman Julian Francis. ‘The work at BTC is pretty much finished; the preparation of BTC is ready and at a certain point over the next month or so I expect that the government is going to say ‘time to proceed; go ahead’.’ The government hopes to place 51% of the telco in private hands, and intends to use proceeds to construct a new hospital. The fixed line services market will be liberalised immediately, while the wireless arena will be made competitive on the first anniversary of the sale, with the licensing of two new wireless operators.
