PTCL net profit drops as fixed line subscribers continue to fall

1 May 2009

Pakistan’s incumbent telco, Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), has reported a fall in net profit in the three months to 31 March 2009. The operator revealed net profit declined 35.9% year-on-year to PKR1.91 billion (USD23.9 million), while revenue also fell to PKR13.9 billion, down 14.5% year-on-year from PKR16.3 billion. The operator said that the fall in revenue was a direct result of a decline in the number of fixed line voice subscribers, although it was noted that the uptake of broadband services helped to offset the losses. PTCL added that, for the nine-month period ending 31 March 2009 revenues from its broadband services surged by 254%, and said that it had 155,000 high speed internet customers at that date.
