Telefonica O2 CR picks NSN for 2G/3G network upgrade

3 Mar 2009

Czech incumbent Telefonica O2 CR has selected Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) to extend its mobile network coverage in the cities of Brno and Prague, the vendor said in a press release. NSN said the deal will enable O2 to provide enhanced capacity and high quality for its high speed wireless services, including mobile broadband and data services. Under the three-year contract, the equipment maker will be the sole supplier of 2G and 3G in the Czech Republic’s two major cities, allowing O2 to offer end users a new mobile broadband experience with fast data sharing and true multimedia services. The NSN solution is based on its Flexi Base station, which offers a flexible and modular concept to mobile access, whilst also promising significant savings in terms of required space and power consumption. In addition, the Flexi solution opens the way for a smooth migration to Long Term Evolution (LTE), it says.

Under the same deal, NSN is also contracted to supply 2G and – optionally – 3G networks for O2 in Slovakia.
