Nigerian wireless network operator Globacom has signed a network expansion contract with French vendor Alcatel-lucent, increasing the cellcos capacity from 30 million subscribers to 45 million. The contract will involve the replacement of existing mobile switching centres (MSCs) with new generation networks, the expansion of coverage to a further 3,000 sites and also of its transmission network by 10,000 km, and has been described by Globacom’s executive director, Mike Jituboh, as ‘the most ambitious expansion project by any telecoms network in Nigeria.’ He added, ‘The upgrading of existing cell sites and the provision of additional 3,000 new cell locations will boost network performances…The technological advancement will attract more subscribers to our network as we move towards strengthening and consolidating our leadership position on the continent.’

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, at the end of September 2008 Globacom was the country’s second largest wireless operator by subscribers to MTN Nigeria, with a total of 18 million customers and a market share of 32.49%.
