UTL to partner Redknee to provide mobile money

27 Feb 2009

Uganda Telecom (UTL) has signed a contract with Redknee Solutions to provide mobile money solutions which will allow its subscribers to pay for goods and store or transfer funds using their mobile handsets. UTL chief commercial officer Hans Paulsen said; ‘90% of the five million households in Uganda do not have bank accounts, hence the need for alternative solutions. With Redknee’s mobile money services, UTL will provide the means to store funds easily and to send payments and transfers using a safe and inexpensive channel.’ The Mobile Money service is expected to be made available initially for domestic payments and transfers only.
