TOT to launch 3G by end-year

23 Feb 2009

Reuters reports that Thai state-owned telco TOT said this morning that it will go ahead with a plan to develop 3G UMTS mobile services on the 1900MHZ/2100MHZ network of subsidiary Thai Mobile, with a commercial launch expected by the end of this year. TOT’s chairman Teravuti Boonyasopon told reporters that the country’s telecoms regulator has approved a plan by TOT to develop 3G services in the 1900MHz spectrum, whilst the investment was expected to be lower than the THB29 billion (USD816 million) earlier planned. ‘We will upgrade the existing 500 base stations in Bangkok and surrounding provinces with a budget of no more than THB3 million for each station,’ Teravuti said, adding that details about how to finance the project would be decided in April. Thai Mobile currently only provides 2G GSM-based services to a tiny user base, and TOT previously announced that it would upgrade the infrastructure to launch 3G services under the TOT 3G brand.
