AIS’s 4Q profit slumps, but sees slight increase over year

19 Feb 2009

Thailand’s largest mobile operator by users, Advanced Info Service (AIS) has reported net profit of THB420 million (USD12 million) for the fourth quarter of 2008, down 92% year-on-year. Reuters reports that the fourth quarter is normally a peak period for mobile use but demand was exceptionally weak due to a downturn in the wider economy exacerbated by the closure of two Bangkok airports late last year by political protesters which reduced revenue from international calls and roaming services, whilst the bottom line was further dragged down as AIS booked an estimated loss ofTHB3.35 billion for a goodwill write-off relating to a subsidiary network. However, the cellco recorded a 0.7% rise in full-year net profit to THB16.4 billion, and expects 2009 service revenue to increase by 3%-4%.
