Finance groups could bid for Ukrtelecom alongside telcos, suggests SPF head

12 Feb 2009

The State Property Fund (SPF) of Ukraine has identified a list of potential buyers for a majority stake in state-run telco Ukrtelecom, including Germany’s Deutsche Telekom (DT), Magyar Telekom of Hungary (a subsidiary of DT) and Turkey’s Turkcell, reports Ukraine’s UNIAN news agency, which cited a TV interview given by the acting head of the SPF, Dmytro Parfenenko. Previously, MTS of Russia stated its interest in the Ukrainian incumbent, whilst the government has also invited Norway’s Telenor to bid in the tender for a 67.79% stake which is set to be launched next month. Parfenenko added that the SPF is also examining the possibility that major international finance institutions such as Raiffeisen and Credit Suisse could be allowed to bid alongside telecoms groups.
