Nigerian company Dangote Group has started to roll out a 14,000km fibre-optic transmission network on power lines, ITNewsAfrica reports. The project is a joint venture between Alheri Engineering, a member of the Dangote Group, and Phase3 Telecoms. Dangote claims that when completed, the network will be the largest in Nigeria, stretching across the country to improve the quality of its GSM services, and will reduce mobile and broadband subscription fees, which are among the highest in Africa. Since the announcement, Ernest Ndukwe, CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has suggested the two companies consider extending their network beyond the country’s borders to other parts of the continent.
