Rural telephony project management transferred

The Nigerian government has transferred management of the first phase of a rural telephony project to five private telcos. According to AllAfrica.com, Key Communications bid USD38 million to manage Ibadan zone, Suburban Broadband bid USD140.5 million to manage FCT, Enugu and Kaduna zones, Voiceware Networks will pay USD30 million to manage Enugu zone also, while Hezonic and Gicell Wireless bid USD30 million and USD20 million to manage Enugu and Bauchi zones respectively. The project started in 2006 with a concessionary loan of USD200 million from China but was not completed until 2007. It involved the deployment of fixed wireless telephony in 218 local government areas across the country, and was carried out by Alcatel Shanghai Bell and ZTE Corporation.
