Gateway upgrade undermining communications

9 Dec 2008

Upgrade work being carried out by Fiji International Telecommunications Limited (FINTEL) on its international gateway is adversely affecting communications during the busy festive period says Consumer Council of Fiji chief executive Premila Kumar, as quoted by The Fiji Times. Many have questioned the logic of carrying out the work at this time of year, following numerous complaints about disruptions to international call services. ‘FINTEL should have advised consumers and businesses of the upgrading works well in advance to better prepare them for the upgrade works. FINTEL is also not stating the exact amount of time the upgrading work will take. As such consumers are unaware of the time when they can expect communications to normalise’, she said. The CEO bemoans that FINTEL operates a monopoly on the international calls market and is calling on the interim government to look again at deregulating it to ensure customers have a better service and wider choice.
