AIS switches on Bangkok UMTS-900 service

3 Dec 2008

Advanced Info Service (AIS) has launched a limited 3G mobile service in Bangkok, with initial coverage of two central shopping areas, reports Reuters. The W-CDMA/HSPA-based service utilises the 900MHz spectrum band used by Thailand’s largest cellco’s existing GSM network, and follows its UMTS-900 launch in the northern province of Chiang Mai in May. AIS plans to expand its 3G services to Chonburi province in the east of the country early next year. China’s Huawei Technologies is acting as the main equipment provider for AIS’s 3G rollout, which will remain strictly limited in scope until telecoms regulator the NTC awards licences for the 2100MHz frequency band, expected by mid-2009.
