North Rock Communications to launch mobile WiMAX in Bermuda

1 Dec 2008

Bermuda’s North Rock Communications, a telco which has been offering wireless broadband, ADSL, dial-up internet service, local and long-distance voice telephony services to the island for a number of years, plans to upgrade to a fully mobile WiMAX network when 3.5GHz 802.16e mobile WiMAX equipment is certified next year. The company pioneered the technology in 2006 offering a fixed WiMAX network using Alvarion BreezeMAX equipment on licensed 3.5GHz spectrum. By offering full mobility, North Rock hopes to take advantage of some of the new 3.5GHz WiMAX devices such as USB dongles and other products such as laptops and handsets as they become available next year. North Rock Communications’ manager Vicki Coelho is quoted as saying: ‘We are thrilled to be leading the roll out of WiMAX in Bermuda. Our customers appreciate the one stop shopping. The quality of service and high bandwidth addresses the needs of our sophisticated market. We look forward to our mobile 4G network.’
