Mobilink expects 50,000 WiMAX users this year

13 Nov 2008

Mobilink, Pakistan’s largest cellular operator by subscribers, and Alcatel-Lucent yesterday announced the successful commercial launch of Mobilink Infinity, a wireless broadband and telephony service for residential and enterprise users based on the mobile WiMAX standard, 802.16e-2005 (Rev-e). Mobilink Infinity went live on 22 October in Karachi, Pakistan’s financial capital. According to the joint statement, in its first week, the service attracted ‘several thousand’ subscribers. Mobilink, a member of Egypt’s Orascom Telecom group, estimates that it will sign up 50,000 WiMAX subscribers by year-end. Mobilink Infinity subscribers can enjoy always-on high speed internet connectivity and ‘high quality’ voice calls using a standard phone or PC interface. Alcatel-Lucent has supplied a comprehensive WiMAX Rev-e solution including both fixed and nomadic terminal devices from various CPE partners, using its Open CPE standards, and the WiMAX network leverages existing sites and equipment in Mobilink’s GSM network.
