PTA to conduct countrywide survey

6 Nov 2008

According to Pakistani news source The News, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is set to carry out a nationwide survey between 10 November and 15 November aimed at finding franchises of mobile operators selling SIM cards without proper documentation. The move comes amid a clampdown by the regulator on the sale of unauthorised SIM cards, and any operator identified breaching rules could face fines of up to PKR310 million (USD4.32 million).

Additionally, the PTA chairman, Dr Mohammad Yaseen, has claimed that, despite the difficult economic situation worldwide, he expects the telecoms sector in the country to grow, with mobile subscriber numbers predicted to reach 100 million within the next four years.
