Zon sees growth opportunities in economic down-turn

17 Oct 2008

Rodrigo Costa, chief executive of Portugal’s largest pay-TV cable operator Zon Multimedia, said the company hopes to benefit from the current financial crisis and is considering the possibility of acquisitions, as reported by Reuters. However, Costa declined to comment on the much speculated suggestion of a merger with Sonaecom, owner of the third largest mobile operator by subscribers, Optimus.

Other growth opportunities for Zon include plans to launch a mobile resale service at the end of October, using spare capacity on the network of Vodafone Portugal, and its interest in bidding for a television channel licence. The company is also rumoured to be preparing to expand operations into Angola, and additional markets in Europe, in the near future.
