OneCom begins WiMAX rollout

1 Oct 2008

The Kenyan internet service provider One Communications (OneCom) has contracted Airspan Networks to provide equipment for a WiMAX wireless broadband rollout. OneCom, in which cellular operator Safaricom has a 51% stake, will deploy a nationwide WiMAX network to target both business and residential users. ‘OneCom seeks to be the first data service provider to establish operations in regions that have traditionally been ignored, whereby the only connectivity available is through expensive VSAT (very small aperture terminal) installations or unreliable analogue links,’ said OneCom CEO Geoffrey Shimanyula.
